If you’ve tried to put the vape down and found it harder than you expected, you’re not alone. Plenty of people who quit smoking years ago, or never smoked at all, find vaping has quietly become part of their day. It’s in the car, at the desk, on the back deck after the kids are in bed.
At Bloom Hypnotherapy & Counselling in Yarrabilba, I work with people from across Logan, Jimboomba and surrounding areas who want to stop vaping. Here’s how hypnotherapy can be part of that, what a session actually looks like, and how to get the most out of it.
Why vaping can be harder to quit than smoking
People are often surprised by this, but in my experience vaping can be harder to walk away from than cigarettes. There are a few reasons for that.
It’s more socially acceptable. Smoking has carried a stigma for a long time. Vaping doesn’t attract the same looks, so there’s less outside pressure to stop and more people around you doing it.
It tastes nicer. Cigarettes are harsh. Vapes come in flavours designed to be pleasant, which makes each puff feel like a small treat rather than a habit you’d rather not have.
You can use it almost anywhere. You can’t light up a cigarette in most places, but a vape is easy to use in spots where smoking was never an option. That means more moments in the day where the habit gets reinforced, and fewer natural breaks from it.
Put those together and vaping can become woven through your whole routine. That’s why I approach quitting vaping with a plan that goes beyond a single session.
How hypnotherapy can help
Hypnotherapy is a focused, relaxed state where you stay aware and in control the whole time. It isn’t about being “put under” or made to do anything you don’t want to do. Instead, it gives us a calm space to work with the part of you that reaches for the vape on autopilot.
A lot of vaping is habit and association: the coffee, the drive home, the stressful phone call, the scroll before bed. In hypnotherapy we work with those patterns and with how you actually feel about vaping, so the reasons you want to stop carry more weight than the urge to pick it up.
Everyone responds differently, and hypnotherapy isn’t a magic switch. But for many people it’s a helpful way to approach change from a different angle, especially if willpower alone hasn’t been enough.
What a quit vaping session at Bloom looks like
My quit vaping session follows the same approach I use for quitting smoking. The main difference is the follow-up, which I’ll explain below.
Before your session
A little preparation makes a real difference:
- Complete the questionnaire. You’ll receive this before your appointment. It helps me understand your habits and history so the session can be tailored to you.
- Stop vaping for as long as you can before you arrive. Even a few hours helps.
- Bring your vape with you. Yes, really.
- Think about how you actually feel about vaping, and why you want to quit. Not the reasons you think you should have, but your own. What’s it costing you? What would be different without it?
During your session
There’s not much you need to do here. Trust the process and be honest with me. You don’t need to try hard or “get it right”. Your job is simply to show up as you are, and I’ll guide the rest.
After your session
This is where vaping is a bit different. Because vaping is so socially accepted and so easy to use, I recommend a follow-up session. This helps set you up for long-term success. It’s a chance to deal with anything that has come up since your first session, including any slip-ups. A slip-up isn’t a failure. It’s useful information about where the habit still has a hold, and we can work with that.
Tips for the first few days
People often ask me for a list of tips to get through the first few days. The honest answer is that it depends on you. Your routines, your triggers and your day-to-day life aren’t the same as anyone else’s.
So rather than handing out a generic list, we work this out together in your session. We look at when and where you usually vape and plan what will work for your routine. That way your plan fits your life, rather than you trying to fit someone else’s advice.
Working alongside other support
Hypnotherapy can sit comfortably alongside other quit support. If you’re also seeing your GP or using a support service such as Quitline, that’s absolutely fine, and it can be helpful to have more than one kind of support in your corner.
In person in Yarrabilba, or online
Sessions are available in person at my Yarrabilba practice, which is an easy drive from Jimboomba, Logan Village and the wider Logan area. I also offer sessions online if that suits you better. Many people find online hypnotherapy just as comfortable, because you’re relaxing in your own space.
