Grief and Loss Counselling

The short answer: grief counselling gives you a safe, private space to talk about a loss and find ways to carry it. Sessions are in person in Yarrabilba, near Logan, or online anywhere in Australia, and there’s no right or wrong way to grieve, and no timeline you have to follow.

Grief Comes in Many Forms

Grief isn’t only about the death of someone close. It can follow many kinds of loss, including:

  • the death of a partner, parent, child, friend or pet
  • a sudden or traumatic loss
  • pregnancy loss
  • separation or divorce
  • the loss of health, a job, a home or a future you’d planned
  • caring for someone who is unwell

Grief can show up as sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, trouble sleeping, poor concentration or feeling like you’re “not yourself”. All of these are common responses to loss.

How Grief Counselling Can Help

Counselling doesn’t try to make grief go away. It helps you make sense of what has happened, talk about the person or thing you’ve lost, and find ways to live alongside the loss. Sessions go at your pace. Some people want to talk a lot; others need time to sit with things first. Both are okay.

Together we might look at:

  • the feelings that come up, including the ones that are hard to say out loud
  • practical ways to get through difficult days, anniversaries and milestones
  • changes in relationships, roles and routines since the loss
  • looking after your sleep, body and wellbeing while you grieve

When Grief Feels Stuck

Sometimes grief feels frozen. A loss might be connected to a traumatic event, or certain memories keep replaying. In these situations, EMDR therapy or hypnotherapy can be used alongside counselling to help process distressing memories. We’ll talk about whether this suits you before using either.

Getting Support Now

If you’d like to talk to someone outside business hours, Griefline offers a helpline on 1300 845 745 (weekdays 10am–8pm). If you’re in crisis or having thoughts of suicide, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24/7), or 000 if life is in danger.

Do I need a referral for grief counselling?

No. You can book directly.

Can I have grief counselling online?

Yes. Sessions are available online anywhere in Australia, as well as in person in Yarrabilba.

What if I don’t know what to say?

That’s okay. You don’t need to have the right words. We go at your pace, and silence is fine too.
