Couples Counselling
Reconnect. Communicate. Move Forward Together.
Relationships can be incredibly rewarding, but even strong relationships can go through periods of conflict, disconnection or uncertainty.
Sometimes you keep having the same argument without getting anywhere. Sometimes communication has broken down. You may feel emotionally distant from each other, struggle with trust or intimacy, or simply feel like you have lost the connection you once had.
Couples counselling provides a safe, structured space to work through these difficulties together and understand the patterns that are affecting your relationship.
At Bloom Hypnotherapy & Counselling, couples counselling is tailored to your relationship, your circumstances and what you want to achieve.

You Don’t Need to Know Exactly What’s Wrong
You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out.
Many couples come to counselling knowing that something isn’t working, but aren’t sure exactly why. Others have a specific issue they want to address.
We can work together to explore what’s happening in your relationship, including:
- Communication difficulties and recurring arguments
- Emotional distance or feeling disconnected
- Trust and relationship difficulties
- Difficulty resolving conflict
- Differences in expectations, needs or values
- Intimacy and sexual relationship concerns
- Changes following major life events
- Resentment, hurt or unresolved issues
- Rebuilding connection after difficult periods
- Repeating relationship patterns
- Separation or uncertainty about the future
- Premarital or relationship preparation
- Strengthening an already healthy relationship
The aim isn’t to decide who is right or wrong. It is to understand what is happening between you and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.
What Happens in Couples Counselling?
Couples counselling is collaborative and focused on helping both partners feel heard and understood.
Depending on your circumstances and goals, sessions may involve exploring:
Communication
Understanding how you communicate during difficult conversations and identifying patterns that cause conversations to escalate, shut down or go unresolved.
Conflict
Looking beyond the argument itself to understand what is driving recurring conflict and learning more constructive ways to navigate disagreements.
Emotional Connection
Exploring emotional needs, vulnerability and the things that may be creating distance between you.
Relationship Patterns
Identifying recurring cycles between partners and understanding how each person’s responses can contribute to those patterns.
Trust and Repair
Working through hurt, resentment and relationship ruptures while exploring what may be needed to rebuild trust and connection.
Intimacy
Where appropriate, counselling can also explore emotional and physical intimacy, including difficulties with desire, connection, communication and sexual relationships.
A Flexible Alternative to Relationship Assessment
Some couples benefit from beginning with a comprehensive relationship assessment before starting therapy.
At Bloom, we offer a Gottman Method Relationship Assessment for couples who want a detailed, structured understanding of their relationship. This includes individual assessment sessions, online questionnaires, a personalised report and a relationship blueprint.
However, an assessment is not required to begin couples counselling.
If you already know that you want to work on your relationship, you can simply book a couples counselling session and begin from there.
Couples counselling may be a better fit if you:
- Have a specific issue you want to address
- Prefer a flexible, session-by-session approach
- Don’t feel you need a comprehensive relationship assessment
- Want to work through issues as they arise
- Are looking for ongoing relationship support
- Simply want a place to talk and work through things together
There is no requirement to complete the full relationship assessment before starting therapy.
What Can We Work On?
Every relationship is different, so sessions are adapted to your circumstances rather than following a rigid program.
You might come to counselling because you’re constantly arguing. You might feel like you’re living more like housemates than partners. You may be struggling to reconnect after a difficult period, or you may simply want to improve your relationship before problems become bigger.
Sometimes the goal is to repair a relationship.
Sometimes it is to understand whether the relationship can move forward.
And sometimes, couples simply want support to maintain and strengthen a relationship that is already working well.
Wherever you’re starting from, counselling provides a space to slow things down, understand what is happening and work toward meaningful change together.
How Sessions Work
Couples counselling sessions are generally conducted with both partners together.
The initial session provides an opportunity to understand what has brought you to counselling, what each of you hopes to achieve and the areas you would like to work on.
From there, sessions are tailored to your needs. Some couples may benefit from a small number of focused sessions around a particular issue, while others may choose to continue with regular counselling as they work through more complex relationship concerns.
There is no fixed number of sessions you must complete.
Your progress and goals will help determine what ongoing support, if any, is appropriate.
Couples Counselling at Bloom
At Bloom Hypnotherapy & Counselling, I take a collaborative and non-judgemental approach to relationship counselling.
My role is not to take sides or determine which partner is “the problem.”
Instead, counselling focuses on helping both partners understand their own experiences, better understand each other and recognise the patterns that may be keeping them stuck.
I draw on approaches including relationship-focused counselling, attachment and relational perspectives, narrative approaches, solution-focused therapy and other evidence-informed counselling strategies where appropriate.
The focus is on creating practical change while also understanding the deeper emotional and relational patterns underneath the difficulties you’re experiencing.
Couples Counselling or Relationship Assessment?
You have two options at Bloom.
Couples Counselling
Flexible, session-by-session support
Ideal if you already know you want counselling and would prefer to begin working on your concerns without completing a comprehensive assessment.
Sessions can be tailored to what you need, whether you are looking for a focused conversation around a particular issue, ongoing relationship counselling, or a longer session to work through more complex concerns.
You can start with a single session and decide together whether further counselling would be helpful. There is no requirement to commit to a package.
