Depression Counselling

The short answer: depression counselling gives you a private, non-judgemental space to talk about low mood, understand what might be feeding it, and find practical ways to get through the hard days. Sessions are in person in Yarrabilba, in Logan City, or online anywhere in Australia, and you don’t need a referral.

What Low Mood and Depression Can Look Like

Depression affects people in different ways. You might notice:

  • feeling flat, empty, sad or numb most of the time
  • losing interest in things you used to enjoy
  • low energy, or everything feeling like an effort
  • sleeping too much or too little
  • pulling away from friends, family or work
  • harsh self-criticism, guilt or feeling like a burden
  • trouble concentrating or making decisions

Low mood can follow a loss, a separation, ongoing stress, trauma, health problems or a big life change, or arrive without an obvious reason. You don’t need to know why you feel this way to book. Read more in Low mood or depression? Signs it’s time to get support.

You Don’t Need to Be in Crisis

Many people wait until they can barely function before asking for help. Counselling can be useful much earlier, when you’ve simply noticed you haven’t felt like yourself for a while.

How Adam Works With Depression

Sessions are tailored to you and can draw on:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to notice the thoughts that keep low mood going and look at them differently
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to reconnect with what matters to you, even when motivation is low. Read what ACT is.
  • Mindfulness and relaxation techniques to step back from rumination
  • Practical steps for sleep, routine and small, manageable goals between sessions

When low mood is connected to grief or past trauma, counselling can include grief counselling or trauma counselling. Some people also choose hypnotherapy for depression, on its own or alongside counselling.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is about getting to know you: what’s been happening, how it’s affecting your day-to-day life, and what you’d like to be different. You decide how much you share, and there’s no pressure to have the right words. Together you’ll work out an approach that suits you.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

It varies from person to person. Adam won’t promise a timeline before meeting you. You’ll review progress together as you go, and you’re always free to pause or stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for depression counselling?

No. You can book directly. If you’d like a Medicare-rebated mental health care plan, that needs a GP referral to a psychologist or other eligible provider.

Is depression counselling the same as seeing a psychologist?

No. Adam is a PACFA-registered counsellor, not a psychologist. Counsellors don’t diagnose depression. If you need a formal diagnosis or want to talk about medication, see your GP.

Should I see my GP as well?

It’s a good idea. Your GP can check for physical causes of low mood, talk through other options, and work alongside counselling.

Can I have depression counselling online?

Yes. Sessions are available online anywhere in Australia, as well as in person in Yarrabilba.

What’s the difference between depression counselling and hypnotherapy for depression?

Counselling is talk-based and focuses on understanding what’s happening and building practical skills. Hypnotherapy uses a relaxed, focused state. You can use either, or both, and you don’t need to decide before your first session.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies from person to person, depending on what you’re working on. Adam won’t promise a timeline before meeting you, and you’ll review progress together as you go.

How much does depression counselling cost?

See our pricing page for current fees. There’s no Medicare or health fund rebate at this stage.
